Audi RS5 with Milltek Active Exhaust

Recommended Reading: Audi RS5 CoupĂ© Video with Milltek exhaust – Video / Movie

I want to know what the heck an “active exhaust” system is, specifically. From the description below, it sounds like only one pipe is open…what gives? If I own an RS5 with a 450hp+ V8, I don’t want to buy an exhaust system that has one of the pipes closed unless I push the “sport” button.

First of all, it’s not going to sound balanced. The video below sounds OK, but that could have been shot with a monaural microphone…in which case we wouldn’t know that the sound was way off in the driver’s seat.

Secondly, a 450hp V8 needs two 2.5″ pipes to flow without restriction (check out our info on choosing the right exhaust pipe size)…if one of the pipes is off during “normal” operation, seems like my gas mileage isn’t going to be as good.

Of course, maybe the car doesn’t need a lot of exhaust flow cruising on the highway.

While I like the concept a lot – a louder system that we can shut off when the cops are around or when it’s early in the morning – it seems a little half-baked if it means disabling half the exhaust system…what do you think?

From MilltekSport.com

The Milltek exhaust system features an Active Exhaust Valve (AEV). The AEV is an electronic flap which works on one of two tailpipes. When closed, the valve helps to keep the sound volume to a minimum but when you press the ‘Sport’ button the valve opens up and releases everything the wonderful 4.2 V8 engine has to offer.
